Collision Of A Cargo Ship And Bridge Causes Bridge Collapse In Baltimore.

A big container ship struck a column on the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore early on Tuesday morning, causing part of the bridge to collapse and perhaps throwing cars and people into the Patapsco River.

According to the Baltimore City Fire Department, reports of a watercraft striking a bridge column began to come in around 1:30 a.m., CBS News was informed.

"There was surely a large tractor-trailer" on the span, however it was unclear how many cars were there.
"There are at least seven people" in the water, and "the dive and rescue team has arrived on scene to locate the individuals."

Using its scanner, the department reported that there was a large amount of diesel fuel in the water surrounding the ship and that workmen were pouring concrete on the bridge at the time.

A representative for the Baltimore police department informed CBS News that there had been a "partial bridge collapse, with workers possibly in the water."
