Empowering Traditional Rulers for National Security: Insights from Lawyer Mohammed Ndarani.

In a recent interview in Minna, Niger State, as reported by Leadership News, Mohammed Ndarani, a prominent lawyer, emphasized the importance of empowering traditional rulers to address Nigeria's security challenges and improve governance accountability. Ndarani, who advocates for constitutional revisions, highlighted the significant role traditional rulers play in combating security issues across the country. He argued for amending the constitution to explicitly recognize the authority of traditional rulers in addressing security challenges, citing their deep-rooted connections within communities and unique insights into local dynamics.

Referring to Article 17 of the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, Ndarani stressed the importance of acknowledging traditional rulers' role in promoting cultural values and protecting community interests. He noted that traditional rulers are increasingly respected and recognized within their communities, positioning them to collaborate effectively with government bodies and security agencies to address security threats and resolve conflicts.

Ndarani's advocacy for constitutional reforms aims to harness the collective wisdom and authority of traditional rulers to tackle security challenges and promote good governance. He also called for the removal of governors' immunity privileges in the upcoming constitutional amendments, arguing that this would hold them accountable for misconduct, corruption, or negligence during their tenure. Ndarani believes that eliminating immunity provisions will foster a culture of transparency, efficiency, and ethical leadership in Nigeria's political landscape.
