Man killed By Police Stray Bullet...
On the Benin/Asaba Road, close to the Igueomo Junction, a Hausa resident was callously killed by a stray gunshot that appeared to have come from a police pistol. The occurrence was heartbreaking and left confusion in its wake.
On Wednesday evening, February 28, the unidentified victim was hit by a stray bullet when he was standing in front of a Point of Sale (POS) operator's home. His goal was straightforward: to send ₦4,000 to his spouse who lived in their hometown.
The police presence was meant to arrest some local miscreants, according to an unidentified source in the region, but the results were disastrous.
According to the source, “Some Benin boys had an issue with the police. Some policemen stormed the area and in the process of chasing the boys, they fired their guns at the fleeing boys, the bullet hit the victim and he died on spot.
“The victim was said to have just transferred the sum of ₦4000 to the wife. When he heard of the commotion outside, it was said that he decided to run for cover, only to be hit by the stray bullet.
“Being that the entire area is dominantly populated by Hausa indigenes, they came out in large numbers, blocked the road in protest. They even vandalized some police vehicles that passed the area this (Friday) morning.”
Armed with machetes and sticks, the angry youngsters blocked down the roadway, built barricades, lit bonfires, and made sure that none could get to either side of it.
Passengers were compelled to get off buses that were coming from the directions of Benin City and Asaba, leaving travelers stranded.
