Iran's Threat of Retaliation Against Israel
After two Iranian generals died in an airstrike in Syria, reports surfaced that Iran was plotting a retaliatory attack against Israel within the next two days.
In response to the attack in Damascus last week, which Tehran claimed was an Israeli airstrike on a diplomatic building, the nation has pledged to retaliate against Israel in two days.
The Wall Street Journal was briefed by a member of the Iranian leadership, who stated that although plans for an assault are being considered, no decision has been made.
'The strike plans are in front of the Supreme Leader and he is still weighing the political risk.' an advisor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei told them.
The strike that took down Iran's consulate in Damascus on April 1st, which claimed the lives of seven Revolutionary Guardsmen, including the two generals, was mostly attributed to Israel.
Days after one of his advisors declared that Israeli embassies are "no longer safe," Iran's top leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a dire warning on Wednesday, saying that Israel "must be punished and will be punished."
Israel Katz, the foreign minister of Israel, quickly retorted on the social networking platform X, saying, "Israel will respond and attack Iran if it attacks from its territory."
President Biden stated on Wednesday that Iran is "threatening to launch a significant attack on Israel," despite diplomatic tensions over Israel's military actions in Gaza. He also pledged "ironclad" support for his key regional ally.
According to the Pentagon, US Central Command chief Michael Kurilla visited Israel on Thursday to speak with Defence Minister Yoav Gallant about the current state of affairs.
White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre said during a conference, "We warned Iran," but she did not provide further details.
The five-story building next to the Iranian embassy in Damascus was completely destroyed by the strike on Monday.
Among those killed in the assault was General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, who had held a number of positions in the Quds Force, the international operations branch of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Since then, the US embassy in Israel has said that it is limiting its diplomats' travel due to security concerns.
They said that employees and their families could not travel for personal reasons outside of the areas of Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, and Beersheeva 'until further notice', citing a need for extreme prudence.
