ASUU Is Considering To Embark On A Strike...

In addition to other issues the government has not yet addressed, the Academic Staff Union of Universities, or ASUU, is set to go on another statewide strike in protest of the lack of governing councils in all federal universities in the nation.

The body recalled that last year, the federal government disbanded the university governing councils. They urged Nigerians to resist the government's move by holding it accountable for any decisions it makes.

ASUU also took issue with the university system's 25% pay increase for other academic staff members and 35% wage increase for professors. The body declared that it considered the pay increase to be a salary award that the government can revoke at any time.

ASUU President Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke is currently holding a press conference at the organization's national secretariat in Abuja.

Osodeke said, speaking during the current briefing, that the Tinubu-led government has had ample time to get things moving.

According to Osodeke, the Federal Government's inability to name members of Governing Councils for Federally Owned Universities is another issue that worries the union.

As it went against the tenets upholding the current universities, he declared that the dissolution of the governing bodies was unlawful.

On June 22, 2023, the National institutions Commission (NUC) declared the dissolution of the boards of other agencies and parastatals in the nation as well as the governing councils of all federal institutions. The NUC instruction was modelled after a comparable order issued by President Bola Tinubu three days prior, which called for the dissolution of the boards of all government organisations, businesses, and parastatals.
