Authorities in Brazil announce that a state of emergency has been proclaimed while the search party works harder to locate the scores of persons who have been reported missing. In an effort to save those stranded on rooftops and families trapped in their houses due to rising waters, soldiers and rescue teams have been working nonstop.
Rio Grande do Sul was experiencing "the worst disaster in its history," according to Governor Eduardo Leitesta, who also indicated that more deaths were anticipated.
Because of the continuous rains that have wrecked bridges, closed highways, and left towns without phone or internet connections, entire settlements in Rio Grande do Sul have been shut off.
In addition to 626 soldiers, 12 aircraft, 45 cars, and 12 boats have already been made available by federal authorities to assist in clearing roads, distributing food, water, and beds, and erecting shelters.
Along with warning residents to stay away from state highway regions owing to the possibility of mudslides, the authorities also asked individuals who resided near rivers or on hillsides to flee.
