Meghan Markle's Yoruba Naming Ceremony and the Significance for Nigerian Culture.

Yoruba traditional clothing has been used to adorn Prince Harry and his wife, Meghan Markle, as guests of the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrosheed Adewale Akanbi.

The Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, was also given the Yoruba name Adetokunbo by Oba Akanbi.

The Defence Headquarters in Lagos arranged a sit-in where the name was revealed alongside the Duke and Duchess of Sussex.

In his speech, Oba Akanbi praised General Christopher Musa, the Chief of Defence Staff, for restoring order to the Nigerian Army through a variety of initiatives, such as commemorating veterans and ill or wounded soldiers with Harry's visit.

Oluwo also gave his guarantee that Meghan's ancestry with Nigeria will be reconstructed during the tour, increasing Nigeria's chances of hosting the Invictus Game in 2027 and strengthening the idea to locate the game's centre there in support of the armed forces.

He stated: “I am elated to be part of this event. I am impressed with the current leadership of the Nigerian Army. They are improving the tempo of our security architecture and boosting the morale of veterans, wounded and injured soldiers.

It is a brave visit from Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, made possible by Defence Headquarters. It will strengthen Nigeria's bid to host the Invictus game in 2027 and strengthen the security alliance. In celebration of Meghan, I'm giving her the Yoruba name "Adetokunbo," which translates to "Crown has returned from abroad."

Meghan said in a 2022 interview that she took a genealogy test and found out she was "43 percent Nigerian."
