Wike And Fabura's Escalating Tension in Rivers State Politics.

The political turmoil in Rivers State has escalated, with the All Progressives Congress (APC) urging the state legislature to initiate impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This move has intensified the rift between Fubara and his estranged godfather, Nyesom Wike, who referred to the selection of his replacement as an error during a public address. Wike, in a plea for forgiveness, acknowledged making mistakes but vowed to rectify them in due course. He encouraged state assembly allies not to succumb to intimidation, asserting their legislative authority.

Responding swiftly, Fubara's camp, led by his chief of staff, Mr. Edison Ehie, promised retaliation against their adversaries. Blaming the state's resource control struggles for the current predicament, Ehie pledged to teach a political lesson to those challenging Fubara's authority. Recent events indicate a divided state legislature, with factions aligning with either Wike or Fubara.

The ongoing crisis stems from disagreements over legislative actions, notably the enactment of the Rivers State Local Government (Amendment) Bill. Governor Fubara's refusal to assent to the bill, which sought to extend the tenure of local government chairmen loyal to Wike, sparked tensions. The House of Assembly overrode Fubara's veto, leading to further confrontations and allegations of abuse of power.

Both the APC and the PDP have engaged in a war of words over the impeachment calls against Fubara. While the APC accuses him of dictatorial tendencies and disrespect for due process, the PDP contends that the lawmakers pushing for impeachment lack legitimacy due to defections. President Bola Tinubu, through his spokesperson, has refrained from taking sides in the conflict, emphasizing the need for impartiality and avoiding any attempts to undermine the Rivers State government.
