Manhattan Cardiologist's Daughter Charged with Murder of Friend's Twin Son.

Nicole Virzi, a girl whose father is a well-known Manhattan cardiologist has been charged with the murder of one of her closest friends' twin sons.

The twin of the deceased baby is allegedly physically abused by Nicole Virzi, a fifth-year doctoral candidate at the San Diego State University/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Programme in Clinical Psychology, leading to her hospitalization, according to accounts.

According to investigators, Virzi was taking care of six-week-old Leon Katz in the Pittsburgh home of Ethan Katz and his wife Savannah Roberts on Father's Day when he passed away.
Both Roberts and Virzi were PhD candidates specializing in eating disorders, trauma, and body image, though Roberts was attending the University of Pittsburgh.

Authorities alleged that the couple had rushed Ari to the hospital due to an unexplained injury to his genitalia, which Virzi had informed them about, and left Leon in Virzi's care.

Virzi is also accused of inflicting the injury on Ari that required the youngster and parents to stay in the hospital.

According to police and court records, Virzi claimed Leon slipped from his bouncer chair while she moved away to retrieve a bottle while the parents were tending to Ari in the hospital.

Doctors, however, concluded that the wounds "consistent with having been sustained as a result of child abuse, as these are inflicted injuries that are not natural and not accidental," WTAE said.

According to a criminal complaint acquired by Pittsburgh's TRIBLive, Virzi was asked to take care of the baby, who was "alert, conscious and not injured," while she was sleeping in a nearby Airbnb on South Graham Street in the neighbourhood.

When Virzi dialled 911 at 11:17 p.m., police arrived at the Walnut Street residence. Authorities stated in the complaint on June 15. Virzi said that the infant had sustained a head bump.

According to the complaint, Virzi informed police that she began watching Leon at around 6:30 p.m. that evening and that he was eating, doing well, and had soiled two diapers.

According to Virzi, she dozed off "for a while while Leon was in the bouncer seat." Virzi claimed that as soon as she heard the infant wailing, she ran to the kitchen to get Leon a bottle.

As Virzi scooped up Leon from the floor, she reported seeing "a large bump to the left side of Leon’s head," according to the prosecutors in the court filing.

Leon was taken by ambulance to the hospital, where, authorities, physicians declared him dead at 5:47 a.m. on Father's Day.

The death was determined to be a homicide by the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office. Blunt force injuries to the head was Leon's cause of death.

Leon had multiple brain bleeds and a serious skull fracture to the left side of his head, according to a head CT scan.

On June 16, Virzi was charged with two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, three counts of severe assault, and criminal homicide.

At the Allegheny County Jail, Virzi is being held without being allowed to post bond.

David Shrager, Virzi's lawyer, informed The Post on Saturday that his client was innocent and will be entering a not-guilty plea.
