House of Representatives to Reduce Salaries by Half for Six Months to Tackle Hardship.

The House of Representatives has taken steps to address the high cost of food and promote national food sufficiency by allocating N648 million to the Federal Government for six months and reducing their own salaries by 50%.
The decision followed Deputy Speaker Benjamin Okezie Kalu's adoption of an amendment to a petition, recognizing the hardships facing Nigeria and proposing that legislators sacrifice 50% of their N600,000 monthly salary to support fellow citizens.

Responding to a motion by Ibrahim Isiaka of Ogun State, which called for statewide rallies against the proposal, Kalu modified his plea. He emphasized that the salary reduction would alleviate the hardships Nigerians are experiencing and assist the federal government in tackling escalating food prices.

Lawmakers urged patience from Nigerians with President Ahmed Tinubu's administration as it addresses national challenges, passing the resolution to allocate funds and reduce salaries.

Following its approval, the motion was referred to the committees on budget, finance, and humanitarian affairs for implementation.
