Nigerian Police to Enforce Digitalized Central Motor Registry (e-CMR).

The Nigerian Police Force has announced that it will begin enforcing the digitalized Central Motor Registry, or e-CMR, over the next 14 days, starting explicitly on July 29, 2024. ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, Force Public Relations Officer at Force Headquarters, Abuja, disclosed this in a communiqué on Saturday.

According to Adejobi, the e-CMR is a sophisticated, real-time online database of motor vehicle data designed to aid in police operations, investigations, and the fight against vehicle-related crimes such as armed robbery, banditry, terrorism, and kidnapping. He claims that it will significantly strengthen the country's safety and security framework by modernizing and digitizing the motor vehicle registration system.

“Following the directives of the IGP, services such as change of ownership, change of license number, change of engine, and change of chassis/body will become seamless. The e-CMR system will ensure the validation of vehicle genuineness and ownership, enhance the ability to track and recover stolen vehicles effectively, and prevent the purchase of stolen vehicles by innocent buyers,” said Adejobi.

Adejobi also urged the public to visit cmris.npf.gov.ng to obtain the digitalized CMR certificate. “The Nigeria Police Force, while seeking the understanding and support of all well-meaning Nigerians and residents on this initiative, remains committed to leveraging technology and strategic approaches to enhance public safety and national security," he stated, outlining the advantages of the exercise. "The enforcement of the e-CMR is necessary to ensure a safer and secure environment for vehicle ownership and to decimate the trend of vehicle theft by greatly reducing the possibility of selling stolen vehicles in the country.”

For optimal safety and security, Adejobi urged all car owners and users to quickly embrace and key into the effort.
