SERAP Urges Nigerian Government to Respect Human Rights and Democratic Freedoms

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP) has called on the Nigerian federal and state governments to drop charges against activists, journalists, and rights defenders who are being prosecuted for peacefully exercising their rights. In its report, 'Broken Promises,' released on July 3, 2024, SERAP demands the release of those arbitrarily detained for similar reasons.

The report highlights a systematic crackdown on civic space and media freedom in Nigeria, urging the government to end these repressive actions. SERAP also recommends reforming the Electoral Act to align with international human rights standards and ensuring the independence of regulatory bodies like the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

SERAP criticizes the misuse of the Cybercrime Act to target critics and demands the government allow fair and impartial elections, respect court orders, and provide access to public information. The report reveals widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians with the democratic process and urges international bodies like the UN and AU to pressure the Nigerian government to uphold democratic rights and freedoms.
