Supreme Court Prohibits Dissolution of Democratically Elected Local Government Councils

The dissolution of democratically elected local government councils was prohibited by the Supreme Court on Thursday. This equates to a violation of the 1999 Constitution, the court decided in a historic ruling.

The highest court declared that the governors, who were the defendants in the lawsuit, had wasted their time. The nation's 774 local government councils were previously given financial autonomy by the Supreme Court.

The Supreme Court censured governors for their long-standing rejection of local government authority in a majority ruling read by Justice Emmanuel Agim.
