Army Officer Allegedly Responsible for Shooting 16-Year-Old Protester in Kaduna Arrested

Ismail Mohammed, a 16-year-old boy, was shot and killed by Nigerian Army personnel during the ongoing EndBadGovernance demonstration in Kaduna State. The army has confirmed that those involved in the incident have been arrested.

The shooting occurred on Tuesday when Nigerian Army troops entered the Samaru neighborhood in Zaria to disperse demonstrators. The Kaduna State Government had previously imposed a curfew, which the security forces were enforcing at the time.

In a statement released on Tuesday evening, Nigerian Army spokesperson Onyema Nwachukwu confirmed the event. The statement detailed that on August 6, 2024, troops responded to a distress call about hoodlums gathering in Samaru, burning tires, and throwing stones at security personnel.

Upon arrival, the troops encountered an aggressive crowd, prompting a soldier to fire a warning shot. Unfortunately, this led to the death of Ismail Mohammed. The soldier involved has been arrested and is undergoing interrogation.
