Discontinuation of Subsidized Rice for Public Employees
The federal government has discontinued the sale of subsidized rice to public employees. Previously, 50 kg bags of rice were sold at a subsidized rate of N40,000 each. This decision was formally communicated through a circular titled "Withdrawal of Internal Circular on Sale of Subsidized Rice to Public Servants."
The announcement came on August 2, during the second day of the statewide rallies themed "End Bad Governance in Nigeria." This move followed an initial announcement by the Ministry of Special Duties and Inter-Governmental Affairs Human Resources Management Department on August 1, 2024, which had detailed the availability of the subsidized rice.
The abrupt discontinuation of this program was disclosed by the Ministry, but no explanation was provided for the sudden change in policy.
