Family of Seven Dies After Consuming Cassava Meal in Sokoto State

In Runjin Barmo hamlet, Kajiji District, Shagari Local Government Area of Sokoto State, a family of seven tragically died after consuming a cassava meal that is suspected to have been contaminated.

The incident occurred shortly after the family had the cassava dish for dinner. Malam Muhammadu Modi Magajin Runjin Barmo, the community leader, informed Asabe Balarabe, the state commissioner for health, who visited the village with a team to offer condolences. The victims included Malam Abubakar, his wife A'ishatu Abubakar, and their five children.

Approximately four houses in the village had consumed the suspected cassava, but no other illness reports were noted from those homes.

Magaji expressed gratitude to Dr. Ahmed Aliyu, the state governor, for his concern conveyed through the Commissioner.

Commissioner Balarabe stated that their visit aimed to identify the cause of the incident and report it to the state government for appropriate action. A surviving child, who is alive by chance, will have samples taken by the ministry for further investigation.

Balarabe prayed for the deceased and offered condolences to the community. She urged residents to report any unusual illnesses promptly to facilitate timely action.

Sani Bello Tambuwal, Director of Health for the Shagari Local Government Area, thanked the Commissioner for her attention and expressed hope for continued efforts in addressing such issues.
