Four Young Men Die While Attempting to Remove Waste from Drainage Pit in Imo State

Residents of Egbu in Owerri North LGA, Imo State, are mourning the loss of four young men who died while attempting to remove human waste from a drainage pit in the Umunwokoji Umuayalu community.

The tragic incident occurred when the four men, who were employees tasked with the removal, took turns entering the pit. None of them emerged alive. According to an anonymous resident, the first man to enter the pit was unable to climb out, prompting the others to enter in an attempt to rescue him. Sadly, all four men lost their lives under mysterious circumstances.

The bodies of the victims have been retrieved and placed in the mortuary. The exact cause of their deaths is not yet known.

Sunday Ihekire, an environmental engineer, commented on the incident, stating, “This tragic event underscores the critical need to prioritize safety protocols in potentially hazardous activities. Our condolences go out to the families and loved ones of the victims during this difficult time.”

A local described the incident as a bad omen, noting that among the deceased was a newlywed man with a month-old child.
