New Protests Expected Over Controversial National Anthem Bill
The Take It Back Movement, known for organizing the recent #EndBadGovernance protests, has announced its intention to hold another nationwide protest against a controversial national anthem bill currently under consideration in the House of Representatives.
The proposed legislation, championed by Speaker Tajudeen Abbas, seeks to impose severe penalties on Nigerians who refuse to recite the national anthem or destroy national symbols. Offenders could face fines of N5 million, a ten-year prison term, or both.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Juwon Sanyaolu, the national coordinator of the Take It Back Movement, condemned the bill, arguing that it threatens fundamental rights. The organization urged the government to focus on addressing the root causes of national discord rather than pursuing what they view as repressive legislation.
The statement reads, “We have witnessed significant public backlash against this bill. It is seen as an attempt to suppress Nigerians' rights, and we stand with the people in opposing this unfair proposal.”
The Take It Back Movement vowed to protect constitutional rights and indicated that they would mobilize nationwide protests if the bill is enacted. The group’s statement emphasizes their commitment to justice and democratic freedoms, reflecting a strong opposition to the proposed legislation.
