Obasanjo Urges State Governments to Prioritize Agricultural Development for Nigeria's Self-Sufficiency
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has called on state governments across Nigeria to prioritize agricultural development as a critical step towards national self-sufficiency in food production. Obasanjo made this appeal during a courtesy visit by a group of commissioners and special advisers from Niger State in Abeokuta over the weekend.
During the visit, Obasanjo emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to become self-reliant in food production, warning that the country remains vulnerable until it can feed itself. He highlighted the potential impact of modern agricultural technology, noting that current efforts in agriculture could yield greater results compared to past initiatives.
As part of the visit, Niger State officials took a group of youths on a tour of a farm where they are being trained in advanced farming techniques. These youths are expected to implement these innovative methods in their local communities, contributing to the state's agricultural development.
Obasanjo praised Governor Umaru Bago of Niger State for his commitment to revitalizing the state's agricultural sector. He compared Bago's initiatives to his own "Operation Feed the Nation" policy, which he launched in 1976. The former president urged other state governors to adopt a similar approach to agricultural development to ensure that Nigeria can produce the majority of its food needs.
He expressed his intention to visit Niger State with his team to observe their progress firsthand and exchange ideas that could enhance and add value to his own agricultural efforts. Obasanjo also encouraged the state to continue investing in agriculture and to explore innovative ways to improve existing practices.
In addition, Obasanjo urged Nigerians to consider investing in soilless farming, emphasizing the importance of adopting creative farming methods to sustain the country's agricultural productivity. He highlighted the role of such innovative practices in boosting the nation's food security and improving the socioeconomic well-being of its citizens.
