Senator Sumaila Kawu Reveals N21 Million as Monthly Salary and Allowances
Senator Sumaila Kawu of Kano South has disclosed that his total monthly compensation as a senator exceeds N21 million. In an interview with the BBC Hausa Service, Kawu explained that while the official salary set by the Revenue Mobilisation, Allocation, and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) is N1 million, after deductions, it amounts to approximately N600,000.
Kawu noted that the substantial increase in monthly compensation comes from various allowances, including those for local travel, newspaper expenses, office running, and other related costs.
This revelation comes a day after the RMAFC, responsible for determining the wages and benefits of political officeholders, stated that the combined monthly salary and benefits for the 109 senators in the upper house amount to N1.06 million. Kawu clarified, “The salary received per month is less than N1 million. After deductions, it is around N600,000. Each senator, however, is allocated N21 million monthly for office-related expenses.”
