The NLC threatens a nationwide strike, Should its President be Taken into Police Custody

The leadership of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a stern warning, threatening to initiate a nationwide strike if Comrade Joe Ajaero, the party's president, is arrested by the Nigeria Police.

This warning was delivered on Tuesday morning at the NLC headquarters, following an emergency meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC). The meeting was convened to address the police's recent invitation to the NLC President over alleged involvement in the suspected funding of terrorism.

The NEC resolved that Ajaero should honor the police invitation. However, they emphasized that their legal counsel would request additional time to prepare before Ajaero's appearance.

Comrade Ado Kabiru Sani, the NLC's deputy president, urged all workers across the country to remain on alert. He warned that if the police acted unexpectedly to detain Ajaero, immediate action would be taken. His words: "As a committed labor center, we will honor the invitation of the police because we are not a faceless organization, but we are working with our lawyer for an extension of time.

"In the event that the President is arrested, all workers will down tools immediately. We should wait for further directives from our leadership."
