Airfares in Nigeria Soar by 25.51% in August 2024, According to NBS

In August 2024, the average domestic airfare in Nigeria for a one-way trip surged by 25.51% month-over-month, rising from N98,561 in July to N123,700, according to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS). The data was revealed in the NBS' Transport Fare Watch report, released on Tuesday.

Year-over-year, the report shows a substantial 56.56% increase in airfare, as the average fare in August 2023 was N79,011.38, compared to N123,700 in August 2024.

Among the states, Niger recorded the highest average airfare, with travelers paying N129,575.21 for a one-way trip. The Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja, followed closely with an average fare of N129,442.67.

On the other hand, Zamfara had the lowest average fare at N102,665.89, followed by Cross River, where airfares averaged N120,088.93 in August.

This spike in airfare coincides with rising costs across other modes of transportation, including train, water, and road, primarily driven by increasing energy prices.
