NEMA Warns of Potential Flooding in Rivers State, Urges Residents to Prepare
Residents of Rivers State have been warned by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) of the possibility of flooding in the next four weeks due to increased rainfall.
In a statement made on Sunday in Port Harcourt, Mr. Adebiyi Razak, the NEMA South-South Zonal Coordinator, alerted citizens to the expected rise in rainfall intensity, particularly in Rivers State. He emphasized the need for residents to take precautions to mitigate the potential effects of flooding.
"As rainfall intensifies in the South-South region, especially Rivers State, we have already started preparing residents in flood-prone areas to minimize the impact," Razak said. He noted that NEMA had already visited several Local Government Areas (LGAs), including Ahoada West, Ahoada East, Andoni, Ndoni, Obio/Akpor, Oyigbo, and Tai.
"Tai has already experienced flash floods, and we have identified two Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camps in the area to accommodate affected residents if needed," he added.
The South-South NEMA chief also pointed out that heavy rains from the northern regions are contributing to the risk of flooding in Rivers State. In anticipation of this, NEMA has begun stocking relief materials and essential supplies, which will be available in case local authorities require assistance.
NEMA is working closely with Local Government Councils and the Rivers State Emergency Management Agency (RSEMA) to ensure that preparations are in place to mitigate the effects of the potential floods.
As residents brace for the possible surge, NEMA encourages communities to remain vigilant, follow local advisories, and take proactive measures to safeguard lives and property.
