Residents in Mpape and Maitama, Abuja, Raise Alarm Over Recurring Earth Tremors

Residents of Mpape and Maitama in Abuja have expressed concerns after experiencing earth tremors over the past three days. The tremors, which began on Saturday, September 14, have left locals uneasy, with many taking to social media platform X on Monday, September 16, to share their worries.

The tremors have also affected areas near Katampe junction, which is linked to the Murtala Muhammad Motorway. Obinna Ngozi, a resident, told DailyTrust that the tremors caused buildings to shake, increasing anxiety. He recalled experiencing the tremors about ten times on Saturday, starting around 4 p.m., and noted that the intensity worsened on Sunday.

Another resident, Muhammad Ibrahim, initially mistook the tremors for a bomb explosion due to the unfamiliar sounds, which he said differed from typical quarry mining noises.

Nasiru Ahmad, a long-time miner in the area, commented that, unlike the clear source of sound during stone blasting, the source of the tremors is difficult to pinpoint. Ahmad explained that stone blasting has a distinctive sound, but this recent noise was unusual and hard to trace.

Concerned residents have reached out to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) on X, seeking an official explanation for the recurring tremors.
