Death Toll from Jigawa State Tanker Explosion Rises to 153, Governor Pledges Support for Victims

The death toll from the recent tanker explosion in Jigawa State's Majia local government district has risen to 153, with over 100 individuals currently hospitalized. Earlier, the death toll was reported at 105, with 70 more people suffering varying degrees of injuries.

The police spokesperson, DSP Lawan Shiisu Adam, confirmed the increase in casualties in a new statement. He noted that the injured are receiving treatment at hospitals in Aminu Kano, Jahun, Nguru, Hadejia, and Gumel, while the deceased have been laid to rest in a mass grave.

Governor Mallam Umar Namadi has expressed his heartfelt condolences for the tragic event. He visited the scene shortly after the explosion and participated in the funeral rites and mass burial of the victims.

"Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the victims during this painful time. We stand in solidarity with those who have lost loved ones and those injured in this tragic incident," he said.

Governor Namadi also announced that the state government would cover the medical expenses for all those injured, who are currently receiving treatment in various hospitals across the state. He assured that the affected families would receive the necessary support and that measures would be taken to prevent such tragedies in the future.

According to the latest figures released by the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), 107 people have died and 57 remain hospitalized with varying degrees of burns from the disaster. Governor Namadi urged the public to prioritize safety during emergencies and avoid gathering at accident scenes to prevent further casualties.
