Enugu State Police Commissioner Orders Investigation into Fatal Shooting of Smith Odinaka

The Commissioner of Police for Enugu State, Mr. Kanayo Uzuegbu, has ordered a comprehensive investigation into the reported shooting and death of a man named Smith Odinaka. This directive was made known in a statement released on Wednesday by DSP Daniel Ndukwe, the command's public relations officer.

According to the statement, the incident occurred on October 13 at around 1 a.m. along the Enugu-Port Harcourt Motorway, near the Mercedes-Benz Company's facilities. Preliminary findings indicate that Odinaka was driving a Mercedes-Benz car with two male friends when a gunshot, allegedly fired by suspected security agents, struck the vehicle.

The gunshot wound to Odinaka's left hip led to his immediate hospitalization, where he was later pronounced dead by the attending doctor. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary, awaiting an autopsy.

The Commissioner of Police has directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, in charge of the State Criminal Investigation Department, to thoroughly investigate the shooting and ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice. The commissioner assured the public that every effort would be made to uncover the truth and hold those responsible accountable.

The statement clarified that, contrary to some circulating reports, the ongoing investigation has not yet linked the crime to any police officer or team. The findings of the investigation will be made public upon its completion.
