Stranded Super Eagles: Nigerian Government Works to Resolve Flight Diversion in Libya

Following the unexpected diversion of the Super Eagles' flight, the Federal Government has announced that it is in communication with the Nigerian Mission in Libya to address the situation. The Super Eagles were en route to Benghazi for the second leg of their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match against Libya, scheduled for Tuesday.

However, the team's flight was redirected mid-air to Al Abraq, a small airfield typically used for hajj operations, leaving them stranded without immediate assistance. The situation was further complicated by the Libyan Football Federation's failure to provide transportation for the team.

In response to the incident, Nigeria's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, addressed the public via his X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, informing them that efforts were underway to assist the team and resolve the issue. He noted that by early Monday morning, at around 6 a.m., the Nigerian contingent had received basic supplies and internet access.

The minister expressed frustration over the delay in securing permission for the team's travel to Bayda City, where Al Abraq airport is located. He assured the public that the Ministry was closely monitoring the situation to ensure the Super Eagles' safe and timely arrival.

"I have been closely monitoring the situation involving the Super Eagles in Libya. Through the Head of the Nigerian Mission in Tripoli, Libya, Ambassador Stephen Anthony Awuru, the Mission has maintained contact with the NFF and the Libyan authorities since last night. Despite efforts, Libyan authorities have not yet authorised the Nigerian Mission’s trip to Bayda City, where the airport is located," Tuggar stated.

He also mentioned that the Head of the Nigerian Community in Benghazi, Mr. Morris Eromosele, arrived at the location at 6 a.m. with necessary supplies and internet access. "We will continue to follow developments and await a report for further action," he added.
