TCN Restores Power to Northern Nigerian States Following Weeks of Blackout; Repair Efforts Continue on Vandalized Lines
The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed the partial restoration of electricity in parts of Northern Nigeria after weeks of blackout. According to a statement by TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah, bulk power was restored at approximately 4:56 p.m. on Wednesday through the reactivation of the 330 kV Ugwuaji-Apir transmission line.
With this development, power supply has resumed in Lafia, Makurdi, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, and Gombe States. TCN also noted that their engineers are now focused on repairing a second vandalized 330 kV line to restore power across additional regions in the North.
“The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has successfully restored bulk power supply through its 330kV Ugwuaji-Apir transmission line 1 as of 4:56 p.m. today, following the completion of repairs on the vandalized section of the line. Bulk power transmission is now restored to Lafia, Makurdi, Jos, Kaduna, Kano, Bauchi, & Gombe States,” TCN stated.
TCN has mobilized materials for the second repair and plans to begin work promptly, once the site is secured. Meanwhile, teams of linesmen are repatrolling the 330kV line 2 to ensure there are no additional affected sections as repairs progress.
The power restoration effort follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s directive to Adebayo Adelabu, Minister of Power, to resolve the Northern Nigeria blackout, which began when the Shiroro-Kaduna transmission line was vandalized on October 21, 2024.
