Umuahia Shuts Down as Businesses and Offices Close, But Peace Prevails
On Monday, the capital of Abia State, Umuahia, appeared deserted from early morning until late afternoon, as most citizens stayed indoors and businesses remained closed. Companies, including banks, petrol stations, and restaurants, did not open, while automobile parks were empty, leaving commercial drivers frustrated with the lack of passengers.
Major roads such as Azikiwe Road, School Road, Ikot Ekpene Road, Aba Road, Uzuakoli Road, Bende Road, and Bank Road were largely deserted, with only a few people and vehicles present. Many government employees did not report to work, particularly those who had to commute long distances to reach their offices. At 1:30 pm, the Office of the Head of Service on Library Avenue was still closed, and the attendance at various public and private schools across Umuahia had dropped significantly. Despite the subdued atmosphere, the city remained peaceful. Security personnel from the Abia State joint security task force, Operation Crush, patrolled the streets to maintain law and order, and there were no reports of violence or harassment.
By 3:00 pm, the city center at Isi Gate began to show signs of life again, as traders and transport operators who had stayed indoors earlier started returning to their businesses, hoping to make sales in the evening.
