Aisha Yesufu Criticizes Lack of Accountability in Leadership and Calls for Active Citizen Engagement

Sociopolitical activist Aisha Yesufu has shared her concerns about political support and accountability, suggesting that unwavering followers of President Bola Tinubu might enable even less effective leadership in the future.

Yesufu questioned the idea of viewing previous leaders like Muhammadu Buhari or Goodluck Jonathan as competent simply in comparison to Tinubu, who she described as facing his own leadership challenges. She expressed her views on X, posting, “Is Buhari now a competent leader because Tinubu is a worse disaster? Jonathan cannot be a competent leader because Buhari became a disaster!”

Yesufu criticized the notion of intimidating people who advocate for change, simply because their previous choice might not have succeeded. Those supporting Tinubu today may one day look to canonize him, even ensuring someone worse follows, just to make him appear saintly in retrospect, she said.

She highlighted what she sees as a lack of accountability among citizens, adding that one of the biggest issues we face is that many citizens don’t hold their chosen leaders accountable. Some wait for a central authority to act rather than engaging and questioning at local levels.

Yesufu noted that unchecked power often leads to corruption. She said that any leader without proper checks by the people risks going rogue, encouraging active civic engagement and accountability.
