Arewa Consultative Forum Urges Tinubu to Rethink Economic Reforms, Citing Northern Hardship
The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has called on President Bola Tinubu to reconsider his economic reforms, emphasizing the need for policies that address the plight of Nigerians, particularly those in northern Nigeria.
In a statement issued after its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Kaduna, the ACF expressed dissatisfaction with the administration's policies, arguing that they have worsened living conditions for the average Nigerian.
The Forum drew attention to the unique challenges faced by the northern region, citing food insecurity, limited access to education, and a reliance on microeconomic activities for survival. "The region faces acute and chronic food insecurity; its youths lack education and skills training. Daunting as these may be, they can be reversed. The time to think big is now," the ACF stated.
The group emphasized that while economic reforms are necessary, they should not exacerbate poverty or hardship for citizens. "Reforms, while desirable, should not impoverish the same people they are meant to serve. The people may not be alive to reap the putative benefits," the statement added.
The ACF expressed concern over the impact of federal government policies on the northern region, describing them as insufficiently sensitive to the precarious conditions faced by its people. "The policies of the current federal government have continued to worsen matters, with little indication of the needed sensitivity to the precarious existential conditions of Arewa people," the communique read.
The Forum highlighted the need for tailored interventions to address the region’s challenges, urging the government to prioritize education, skills training, and food security.
In a related development, the ACF reiterated its position to back a northern candidate in the 2027 presidential election, signaling its commitment to advocating for the region’s interests on a national stage.
The ACF’s call underscores the importance of balancing economic reforms with measures that alleviate hardship for vulnerable populations. As the nation navigates its economic challenges, the need for inclusive and equitable policies remains critical.
