Bode George Urges PDP Unity Ahead of 2027 Elections Amid Economic Challenges
As Nigeria grapples with economic challenges, Bode George, a former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has called for unity within the party to position it for success in the 2027 presidential elections.
Speaking during his 79th birthday celebration in Lagos, George emphasized the need for internal cohesion to unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
George highlighted internal divisions as a significant hurdle for the PDP, urging party members to set aside personal interests.
"If we want to win the 2027 presidential election, we should not allow ourselves to be divided. Those with divisive tendencies should be told in clear language that ‘Enough is Enough,’" he said.
He argued that the current economic situation has left many Nigerians eager for a change in leadership.
"With the suffering in the land and the mismanagement of the economy, Nigerians are waiting for us in 2027 to kick APC out of Aso Rock."
The PDP continues to face internal crises, which have impacted its ability to function as a cohesive opposition. Segun Sowunmi, a PDP chieftain and former spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, accused President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of exacerbating the party's difficulties.
Despite these challenges, the party is gearing up for its 99th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting, scheduled for November 28, 2024.
As the 2027 elections approach, calls for unity within the PDP underscore the importance of strategic planning and collaboration to regain public trust. The party’s ability to address its internal challenges will likely determine its chances of success against the APC.
