Chief of Defence Staff Advocates Comprehensive Approach to Security Management

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, has called for a holistic approach that combines military efforts with good governance, community involvement, and diplomacy to address the nation’s security issues. The statement was made on Monday during the launch of the Nigerian Institute of International Affairs' (NIIA) International Security Management Course (ISMC-5) in Abuja.

The course, themed "Emerging Security and Economic Issues in the ECOWAS Sub-region," was organized in collaboration with the ECOWAS Commission and Peace Building Development Consult (PBDC). Brig.-Gen. Raymond Utsaha, Deputy Director of Peacekeeping Operations at Defence Headquarters, represented Gen. Musa at the event.

According to Musa, the ISMC-5 course illustrates a broader commitment among national and sub-regional institutions to tackle insecurity. He emphasized that today’s complex security landscape demands efficient management strategies, given challenges such as terrorism, cyber-threats, transnational organized crime, geopolitical tensions, and environmental crises.

“Our approach to these challenges needs to be comprehensive and integrate military strategies with diplomatic efforts, community engagements, and good governance,” Musa noted. He highlighted that a sophisticated understanding of both national and international security dynamics is crucial to developing effective responses to these emerging issues.
