Controversy Surrounds Endorsement of Seyi Tinubu for Lagos Governorship in 2027
Recent endorsements of Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, as a potential candidate for the Lagos State governorship in 2027 have sparked heated debates across various political and social circles.
The Coalition of Nigerian Youth Leaders (CONYL) initiated the endorsement, citing Seyi's track record of philanthropy and community support, including relief efforts during the Borno State flooding crisis.
Other groups, such as the Middle Belt Youths and the Friends of Seyi Tinubu (FOST), followed suit, describing him as a visionary leader with the qualities needed to steer Lagos toward innovation and prosperity.
Comr. Adejorin Tai Manuel, president of FOST, remarked, "Seyi Tinubu’s leadership skills, dedication to social advancement, and charitable donations demonstrate his suitability as governor."
The endorsements, however, have been met with significant resistance:
Joe Igbokwe, an APC member, dismissed the endorsements as a ploy to tarnish President Tinubu’s image. He stated:
“Who are these faceless people pushing Seyi Tinubu for Lagos governor? This is a needless distraction. Ruling Lagos is not the job of boys.”
The Coalition of Lagos Indigenous Youths condemned the endorsements, asserting that Lagos' governorship is reserved for indigenous candidates. They expressed frustration over decades of marginalization and suggested alternative roles for Seyi in Osun State or Imo State, where the endorsement was initiated.
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Lagos Chapter rejected the idea, with spokesperson Hakeem Amode declaring that Lagosians would resist dynastic politics. He stated:
“Governorship is not a gift. Lagos will not serve him.”
Deji Adeyanju, a human rights advocate, criticized the move as undemocratic, likening it to a monarchy. He urged Lagosians to reject the notion of power inheritance, emphasizing the need for accountability and genuine elections:
“It makes no sense that they underrated Lagos people. Is Lagos a monarchy where the Tinubu family reigns supreme?”
- Democracy vs. Monarchy: Critics argue that endorsing Seyi Tinubu undermines democratic principles, presenting governance as hereditary.
- Indigeneity and Representation: Indigenous groups highlight the exclusion of Lagos-born candidates in leadership roles and demand equity.
- Political Accountability: Allegations of "selection" over elections in Lagos politics have resurfaced, fueling calls for transparency.
While some groups view Seyi Tinubu as a capable and visionary leader, opposition voices emphasize that Lagos' governorship should reflect the will of the people, not the influence of a single family.
