FCT Police Command Busts Car Theft Syndicate; Urges Public Vigilance

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command has busted a notorious car theft ring involved in receiving, rebranding, and selling stolen vehicles. According to a statement released on Sunday, November 10, 2024, by the Command's spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh, the operation led to the arrest of syndicate member Steven Abang, who was traced to Jos, Plateau State.

Abang admitted to selling over 16 stolen cars to buyers over the past four years. The statement also detailed the case of Mr. Philemon Olaoluwa, who reported his Honda Accord (2006 model, ash color, registration number RBC 40 NW) stolen on October 10, 2024.

The statement explained, "Mr. Olaoluwa’s car developed a mechanical fault, and on a friend’s recommendation, he engaged a mechanic from Apo Mechanic Village, FCT, named Abdulhamid Saidu (currently at large). Unaware of Saidu’s intentions, Mr. Olaoluwa handed over his vehicle along with its documents. However, instead of repairing the car, Saidu disappeared with it.”

Using digital tracking technology installed in the vehicle, FCT Police Command operatives traced the car to Rayfield, Jos, where it was found with Steven Abang. Abang, known for his role in receiving, rebranding, and selling stolen vehicles, confessed to receiving the vehicle from his accomplice, Saidu. At Abang’s workshop, police also found two other vehicles, a Hyundai Accent and a Peugeot 208, which were in the process of being rebranded and are suspected to be stolen as well.

Abang revealed he had a network of ready buyers, having rebranded and sold over 16 stolen vehicles in the past four years. He is currently in police custody and will be charged in court following further investigations.
