Governor Zulum Launches Borno State Summit to Reform Almajiri Education System and Address Insurgency Factors
Governor Babagana Umara Zulum of Borno State has highlighted the improper teaching of Islamic studies as a contributing factor to the Boko Haram insurgency in the state. Zulum made this statement on Wednesday during the launch of a symposium in Borno focused on reforming the Almajiri education system.
The goal of the summit is to revamp the Almajiri education system, a traditional Islamic teaching method commonly practiced in northern Nigeria. To address the challenges associated with Almajiri education, the Borno State Government established the Arabic and Sangaya Education Board and introduced a standardized curriculum for Islamic and Sangaya schools.
"The Sangaya Reform is a major development that offers Almajiri students a better future by integrating Western education, vocational training, numeracy, and literacy skills into their curriculum," Zulum explained. "These improvements will help reshape Almajiri and Islamic schools, providing students with broader educational opportunities."
He continued, “Our government is committed to aligning informal and formal education through quality integrated Sangaya schools that will enable students to gain admission into colleges and universities.”
The summit serves as a platform for educators, policymakers, and stakeholders to discuss challenges within the Almajiri education system, exchange insights, and propose effective solutions.
