IGP Egbetokun Orders Strict Action Against Corruption, Announces Child-Friendly Police Training Program

Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has ordered "severe" punishment for corrupt officials and condemned recent extortion cases involving some members of the police force. In a statement released on Friday, November 8, and signed by Force Public Relations Officer ACP Olumiyiwa Adejobi, the police chief highlighted an incident involving officers from the Zone 16 Zonal Headquarters in Yenagoa. Officers ASP Emmanuel Ubong, Inspector Nse Okon, Inspector Adiewere Collins, and Inspector Kuromare Marine have been accused of extorting N10 million from a group of young Nigerians.

The statement emphasized, “The Nigeria Police Force, under the leadership of IGP Egbetokun, maintains a zero-tolerance policy for any act of corruption and police misconduct, as the Force takes every allegation of extortion and abuse of power extremely seriously.”

The IGP reassured the public that the Force will thoroughly investigate all allegations against officers, aiming to ensure accountability. He has mandated strict consequences for any officer found guilty of misconduct, irrespective of rank, to serve as a deterrent to others.

In addition, ACP Adejobi announced that the IGP has planned a workshop focused on child care and effective investigation practices for police officers. “To guarantee that officers within the Force receive adequate training in child care and protection, as well as in effective investigations for vulnerable individuals, especially children in conflict with the law, the IGP has rescheduled the workshop with all Heads of Police investigative units to take place on Monday, November 11, 2024.”

The workshop aims to improve technical skills and reinforce ethical principles, fostering a child-friendly police system in Nigeria. By prioritizing compassion, transparency, and adherence to modern investigation techniques, the Nigeria Police Force seeks to build professionalism and accountability within its ranks, strengthening public trust and confidence in the organization.
