KEDCO Reports N6 Billion Losses Due to 12-Day Power Outage in Northern Nigeria
The Kano Electricity Distribution Company (KEDCO) reported nearly N6 billion in losses following a 12-day power outage that disrupted social and commercial activities in Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina. Sani Bala Sani, KEDCO's Head of Corporate Communications, noted that the outage was exacerbated by the vandalism of 70 transformers.
Sani explained, “The company is implementing load shedding, prioritizing industrial and commercial feeders to support economic growth, especially in Kano, an industrial hub.” He attributed the blackout to a tripping incident on the 330kV transmission line, which cut off power to several states in the northwest and northeast from the national grid.
Power was finally restored on Wednesday after efforts to balance distribution between residential and industrial areas. According to Sani, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) worked intensively to reconnect affected states, gradually restoring power across northern communities.
