Nigeria Falls to Rwanda in 2025 AFCON Qualifier Despite Secured Tournament Spot
Nigeria concluded their 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualification campaign with a surprising 2-1 defeat to Rwanda at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Despite the loss, the Super Eagles had already secured their place in the tournament by finishing as winners of Group D. Interim manager Augustine Eguavoen’s team entered the match with high expectations.
The game began on a promising note for Nigeria, with Samuel Chukwueze scoring a stunning solo goal in the 59th minute to put the three-time African champions ahead. However, Rwanda responded decisively, with goals from Innocent Nshuti and Ange Mutsinzi in quick succession, marking their historic first-ever victory over Nigeria.
This match also marked the first loss for the Super Eagles under Eguavoen’s tenure as interim manager, raising questions about his future in the role.
