Oba of Benin Praises Edo Governor for Restoring Traditional Authority

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has expressed profound gratitude to Governor Monday Okpebholo for reinstating the full statutory powers of the Benin monarchy, a move the Oba described as a triumph over detractors.

In a letter dated November 27, 2024, the monarch commended the governor's swift action to reverse decisions by the previous administration under Governor Godwin Obaseki, which had undermined the authority of the Benin traditional institution.

The letter, co-signed by prominent palace chiefs such as Stanley Obamwonyi (Esere of Benin), Edionwe Oliha (Oliha of Benin), Osaro Idah (Obazelu of Benin), and Norense Ozigbo-Esere (Osuma of Benin), highlighted key decisions applauded by the Oba, including:

  • Reinstatement of the Oba’s statutory powers as the sole traditional ruler in Edo South Senatorial District.
  • Reversal of the revocation of the Oba Akenzua II Cultural Centre concession.

The Oba’s Chief Press Secretary, Osaigbovo Iguobaro, conveyed the palace's statement to reporters in Benin City, noting the symbolic and practical significance of Governor Okpebholo’s actions.

The Oba referred to the reinstatement of powers as an action that “devastated detractors” and brought joy to allies. He described it as “marvelous in the eyes of the Almighty God” and commended the governor’s early efforts to address the concerns of the Benin Kingdom.

“We deeply thank your Excellency for deeming it fit and necessary to restore the full statutory rights of the Oba of Benin, respecting the rights and privileges of the Omo N’Oba as the only traditional ruler of Benin Kingdom in Edo South Senatorial District and custodian of the rich cultural heritage,” the letter read in part.

The monarch also prayed for divine guidance and strength for Governor Okpebholo as he embarked on the transformation of Edo State.

The restoration follows actions by the former administration that disrupted traditional governance structures in Edo South. Governor Obaseki’s government had established parallel Benin Traditional Councils (BTCs) across the seven local government areas in the senatorial district, amid allegations that some Enigie (Benin Dukes) led a rebellion against the monarchy.

Oba Ewuare II described Governor Okpebholo as divinely sent to “cleanse Edo State” and bring meaningful change. The palace lauded the governor for making these significant moves within just two weeks of assuming office.
