Sokoto State Relaunches Hisbah to Promote Morality and Social Harmony

On Thursday, November 21, Sokoto State Governor Ahmed Aliyu relaunched the state’s Hisbah Board and inaugurated its new office, signaling a renewed focus on promoting moral values and social order.

The Hisbah, operating under the Ministry for Religious Affairs, had previously faced operational challenges due to government neglect. Governor Aliyu assured citizens that the board's activities would now be closely monitored to prevent any human rights abuses.

Governor Aliyu explained that the relaunch aims to enhance Islamic culture, morality, and values, contributing to social harmony and societal advancement.

“The state Hisbah would be encouraged to rid the state of social vices against consequences driven by negative morals and behaviours,” he said.

He emphasized that the Hisbah is not a replacement for state police but a supportive body focused on moral guidance for Muslims. Arrested suspects will still be handed over to the police for prosecution.

“Hisbah is not a state police but an organised body established to sanitise Muslims in the state. Police should also know that Hisbah is not a rival to its conventional operations,” Aliyu clarified.

To ensure effectiveness, the state government has provided vehicles, motorcycles, and a monthly imprest for operations. Plans are also underway to establish offices at the local government level to expand its reach.

Qualified individuals have been appointed to manage the board, ensuring activities align with legal frameworks and Islamic principles.

Dr. Jabir Sani Maihula, Commissioner for Religious Affairs, praised the governor's unwavering support for religious institutions.

“This path would enable the achievement of the highest standard of morality, harmony, and sanity to prevail,” he said.

Representing the Sultan of Sokoto, Waziri Sokoto Sambo Wali Junaidu expressed gratitude for the restoration of the Hisbah.

“This will positively influence trust and sanity among citizens and reshape and enrich them in faith for societal benefit,” he stated.

The relaunch of Sokoto’s Hisbah Board reflects the state’s commitment to upholding moral values, fostering social harmony, and addressing social vices. With proper oversight and coordination, the initiative is poised to bring significant benefits to the community.
