Afe Babalola SAN Petitions Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee Over Alleged Professional Misconduct by Dele Farotimi

Prominent Nigerian lawyer Aare Afe Babalola, SAN, has filed a petition with the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee (LPDC) against fellow lawyer Dele Farotimi over alleged breaches of professional conduct.

The petition, signed by Ola Faro on behalf of Afe Babalola & Co., accuses Farotimi of defaming several prominent legal figures and the judiciary in his book titled "Nigeria and its Criminal Justice System."

Citing alleged violations of the Rules of Professional Conduct for Legal Practitioners, the petition lists accusations including:

  • Making unsubstantiated claims of corruption against the judiciary.
  • Assisting clients in purportedly unlawful actions.
  • Using unprofessional language against judicial officers.

The petition stresses the need to uphold the dignity of the legal profession and the judiciary, describing the allegations as harmful to the administration of justice.

In response, the FCT High Court has issued an order restricting the publication, distribution, and circulation of Farotimi’s book pending further review.

This case underscores the importance of professionalism and decorum within the legal community, as well as the mechanisms in place to address disputes and uphold ethical standards.
