Anambra Government Responds to Fatal Rice-Sharing Stampede
The Anambra State Government has expressed deep regret over the tragic deaths caused by a stampede during a rice-sharing event in Okija town, Ihiala Local Government Area, on Saturday.
In a statement by his press secretary, Mr. Christian Aburime, Governor Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo extended his condolences to the families of the deceased. The victims included women, the elderly, pregnant and nursing mothers, and children.
The statement read: “In his expression of sympathy, Anambra State Governor, Professor Chukwuma Charles Soludo, extends his deepest condolences to the families of the deceased, especially the women, the elderly, pregnant, nursing mothers, and children who lost their lives in this unfortunate incident. The State Government has also implored all well-meaning individuals and organizations engaged in charitable activities to prioritize the safety and well-being of beneficiaries.”
The Governor acknowledged the noble intentions of the Obi Jackson Foundation, led by Chief Ernest Obiejesi, which organized the event to distribute relief materials to less privileged members of the community during the festive season. However, he emphasized the need for structured and safer approaches to such charitable activities.
The State Government has initiated a comprehensive inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the stampede. The investigation aims to identify any lapses or negligence in safety protocols.
Recommendations for future events include:
- Establishing multiple distribution points within communities to reduce overcrowding.
- Prioritizing vulnerable groups such as the elderly, pregnant women, children, and people with disabilities.
- Employing trained personnel to manage crowds and maintain orderly queues.
- Conducting public awareness campaigns on safety protocols during relief distributions.
The Governor concluded by reiterating the government’s commitment to working closely with relevant agencies to address the root causes of the incident and prevent future occurrences.
