APC Leader Advocates Diplomatic Solutions for Regional Peace
Nurain Mumuni, a leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), has advised President Bola Tinubu to seek the assistance of the African Union (AU) or the United Nations (UN) to ease tensions arising from allegations of state-sponsored terrorism involving the Niger Republic.
The APC leader’s suggestion follows claims by General Abdourahamane Tiani, the head of state of the Niger Republic, accusing Nigerian officials of receiving funds from France to establish a military base in Borno State.
Mumuni emphasized that diplomatic, political, and military measures could address these serious allegations effectively. He urged the involvement of neutral third parties like the AU, UN, or trusted nations to facilitate dialogue and mediate the conflict.
"Direct negotiations between the involved parties can help clarify misunderstandings and reduce tensions," Mumuni stated. He recommended bilateral talks, mediation by international organizations, and independent investigations to establish the facts and ensure accountability.
Mumuni noted that accusations of this nature have significant implications for regional peace and stability, underscoring the importance of addressing them swiftly. "Confidence-building measures, such as joint military exercises or intelligence-sharing agreements, can help rebuild trust and demonstrate a commitment to collaborative security," he added.
He also highlighted the potential role of public statements and diplomatic notes in restoring credibility and fostering mutual trust between nations. Rapid response mechanisms, he suggested, could effectively manage conflict situations and facilitate timely resolutions.
The APC leader reiterated the need for a multifaceted approach combining diplomatic engagement, security cooperation, and efforts to address underlying grievances. "Ultimately, resolving such accusations requires balanced efforts to restore trust and stability in the region," Mumuni concluded.
