BCDC Urges Vigilance During Christmas Amid Rising Security Concerns in Plateau State
The Bokkos Cultural Development Council (BCDC) Vanguard in Plateau State has called on its citizens, particularly those in rural areas, to remain vigilant and prioritize security during the Christmas season.
The council issued the warning in response to last year’s tragic events, where terrorists targeted Christian communities during Christmas, leading to a six-day killing spree that claimed hundreds of lives.
In a joint statement by Chairman Barr. Farmasum Fuddang and Secretary Amb. Duwam Bosco, the council highlighted, “Reports of planned attacks in several communities have already surfaced. While many are yet to be verified by security agencies, it is crucial to take necessary actions to ensure personal safety.”
The statement cited the murder of Haruna Shol, a youth and community leader, on December 17 as a stark reminder of existing dangers. Shol, who had recently led rebuilding efforts for displaced community members, was attacked and killed on his farm in Garau village, Mbar district.
Additionally, the statement noted a series of violent incidents targeting community leaders and security mobilizers, including:
- The November 26 killing of a civilian guard during a night raid on church property in Maikatako.
- The December 6 murder of Mrs. Christiana Isaac Mahwash, a women’s leader in Fakkos.
- The October 14 killing of five civilian guards in Rafut, Tarangol.
According to the council, over 100 community members have been killed in the Bokkos area this year, with no arrests made to bring justice to the victims. Instead, it lamented that some community members have been detained by security agencies for guarding their homes.
The council urged communities to organize vigilantes, stay vigilant against potential threats, and prioritize group safety when farming or traveling. “It is better to err on the side of caution and prioritize safety, even if it means being arrested for taking necessary precautions,” the statement advised.
The council also emphasized the need for security agencies to ensure fairness and accountability, urging them to protect civilians and address the ongoing violence in the region.
