Federal Government Assures Nigerians: No Detection of New COVID Variant XEC in the Country

The Federal Government has assured Nigerians that the newly reported COVID-19 variant, XEC, has not been detected in the country. This reassurance came amidst global concerns about the variant’s increased virulence, having been initially identified in Australia and spreading to 29 countries.

In a statement released on Saturday, Alabi Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations at the Ministry of Health, urged Nigerians not to panic but to continue observing personal hygiene and other universal safety precautions.

“You may recall that a newly detected COVID variant, XEC, was reported in Australia and has spread to about 29 countries globally. It has shown greater virulence over other circulating strains, raising concerns over its possible impact on healthcare services,” the statement noted.

“However, the good news is that there is no evidence of the COVID variant XEC in Nigeria,” Balogun added.

To prevent the potential spread of the virus, the Federal Ministry of Health has strengthened its surveillance systems, particularly at entry points across the country. Additionally, federal tertiary hospitals have been upgraded with molecular laboratories, isolation centers, and ventilator-equipped intensive care units.

The Ministry reiterated its commitment to safeguarding public health and encouraged Nigerians to adopt universal safety measures such as frequent hand washing and maintaining personal hygiene.

“It is imperative to correct the misinformation causing fear among the public concerning the resurgence of COVID-19 in Nigeria. The federal government remains proactive in addressing any potential health challenges,” the statement emphasized.

Nigerians are advised to stay informed through verified channels and to cooperate with health authorities to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all.
