Governor Adeleke Grants Clemency to 53 Inmates in Osun State

Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has granted clemency to 53 inmates of the Nigerian Correctional Service, pardoning them in line with constitutional provisions.

The governor’s spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, announced this in a statement on Thursday, emphasizing that the decision was guided by recommendations from the State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy.

According to the official communication dated December 24, 2024, the beneficiaries of the pardon include individuals who had served significant portions of their sentences, with some having spent over 10 years in custody or previously sentenced to capital punishment.

Governor Adeleke’s statement read: “In exercise of the power conferred on me by paragraph (a), (c), and (d) of subsection (i) of Section 212 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended), I am pleased to extend my grace and mercy to these inmates.”

The governor commuted various sentences, ranging from death penalties to life and other long-term imprisonments, as outlined in the schedule accompanying the statement.
