Hackers Target NBS Website Amid Release of Crime and Security Report
The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has confirmed that its website was hacked.
In a post on X on Wednesday, the agency announced the breach and cautioned the public against relying on any reports published on the site until it is restored. “This is to inform the public that the NBS website has been hacked, and we are working to recover it. Please disregard any message or report posted until the website is fully restored. Thank you,” the NBS stated.
The hacking incident occurred just a day after the bureau released the results of its Crime Experience and Security Perception Survey.
According to the report, Nigerians paid an estimated N2.23 trillion in ransom between May 2023 and April 2024. Additionally, the survey revealed a total of 51.89 million crime events reported in Nigerian households during the same period.
The north-west region recorded the highest number of crime incidents, with over 14 million cases, while the south-east reported the lowest, at just over six million. The report also highlighted a higher crime rate in rural areas (26,526,069) compared to urban areas (25,360,963).
Efforts to recover the NBS website and restore its operations are ongoing.
