Nigeria Refutes Claims of Collusion with France to Destabilize Niger

The Federal Government of Nigeria has dismissed as frivolous and baseless the allegations made by General Abdourahamane Tchiani, the military leader of the Niger Republic, in a widely circulated video. The claims suggested that Nigeria and France colluded to destabilize Niger.

The Nigerien government alleged that Nigeria collaborated with France to establish a terrorist base in Sokoto State, named Lakurawa, with the intent to undermine Niger's stability. It also accused Nigeria of attempting to harm Niger's crops and pipelines.

In a statement released on Thursday, Mohammed Idris, Nigeria’s Minister of Information and National Orientation, described these accusations as unfounded and originating solely from the Niger ruler's imagination. Idris clarified that Nigeria has never engaged in any covert or overt alliance with France or any other country to support terrorism or destabilize Niger.

“Nigeria remains steadfast in promoting peace, harmony, and the enduring diplomatic ties with Niger,” the Minister stated. He further emphasized that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, in his capacity as ECOWAS Chairman, has demonstrated exemplary leadership by keeping diplomatic channels open with Niger despite its current political situation.

“Nigeria’s Armed Forces, in collaboration with the Multinational Joint Task Force, have been successful in curbing terrorism in the region. It is, therefore, absurd to suggest that Nigeria would conspire with any foreign power to destabilize a neighboring country,” Idris added.

He firmly denied claims that Nigerian officials had ever armed or assisted terrorist organizations against Niger. Additionally, Idris asserted that no Nigerian territory has been ceded to foreign powers for subversive activities.

“Nigeria has a longstanding history of defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity. Unlike some nations, we have never allowed foreign powers to establish military bases on our soil,” Idris affirmed, highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to regional leadership and national independence.

The Nigerian government reiterated its dedication to fostering peace, security, and cooperation within the ECOWAS region, ensuring stronger ties between the peoples of Nigeria and Niger.
