Stampedes in Nigeria Claim 75 Lives Amid Economic Hardship

In the past four days, at least 75 Nigerians seeking alms have died in stampedes, sparking outrage nationwide. The incidents highlight the dire economic challenges faced by the populace, as almsgiving ceremonies continue to attract overwhelming crowds, often resulting in tragic outcomes.

Three separate stampedes occurred during the distribution of food and other items by individuals, groups, and religious organizations.

On Wednesday, December 18, over 40 children lost their lives during a funfair organized by Prophetess Naomi Shikemi, the former Queen of Ooni of Ife, at the Islamic High School in Bashorun, Oyo State. The Oyo State Police Command reported that 35 bodies were found at the scene, while six severely injured children were taken to the hospital. By Friday, December 20, the death toll had risen to 40 as more victims succumbed to their injuries. Authorities have detained Prophetess Naomi and seven others linked to the event as investigations continue.

In Anambra State, over 20 people died in a stampede during a rice distribution event organized by the Obijackson Foundation. The foundation had planned the event as part of its Yuletide tradition to support the less privileged. However, record-breaking attendance and a rush for rice led to the tragic loss of lives, with many others still in critical condition.

On Saturday, tragedy struck again in Abuja, where about 15 alms seekers perished in a stampede during meal distribution at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama. This incident brought the Federal Capital Territory its share of the growing crisis.

The series of stampedes has provoked widespread criticism of President Bola Tinubu's administration, with many Nigerians attributing the tragedies to the nation’s ongoing economic hardship. Sociopolitical activist Aisha Yesufu accused the administration of turning “the whole of Nigeria into a massive grave,” while others expressed discontent with the government's policies.

Public figures have called for systemic reforms to address the root causes of the economic crisis and prevent such tragedies in the future.
